Salt is needed only to soften the water; if you plug the hoses, the dishwasher should most likely give an error message that there is no salt and continue to work, but this also depends on the manufacturer

On the AKPO ZMA55 dishwasher, the salt indicator lights up after several washes. When you open the lid of the salt container, water flows out. The last time I didn’t do anything, I just opened the container, the water flowed out - I closed it. After that, the indicator went out.

In the CANDY cdcp 8 dishwasher, the leakage indicator went off, I took it apart and saw that the entire bottom of the salt tank had been torn by ice (this is at the dacha).
