Dishes smell like dog after being washed
Please help, maybe someone has encountered such a problem! The dishes, after being washed in the dishwasher, stink of dog!! Disgusting smell, but the dishes are clean and shiny. I changed the tablets, rinse aid, salt is always available. I wash the inside of the dishwasher regularly, the filter, the walls. I tried running it with baking soda and vinegar. Nothing helps (((
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
In your opinion, how harmful could this be to health and is it a malfunction of the machine?
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
I can’t say for sure about the harm to health, but it seems to me that there shouldn’t be any harm. The corrosion effect occurs only in glass and ceramic dishes with a glossy finish. However, this doesn’t mean you have to put up with the smell. Look for the right settings. Also pay attention to the quick dry settings, if available. Try turning off the noise completely.
Failure of the ion exchanger and loss of resin properties is definitely a malfunction of the machine. In less severe cases, the resin can be restored by washing it at maximum settings 4 times. But the smell can also be caused by incorrect hardness settings. Obviously, the cause of the breakdown of the ion exchanger may be residue left on the dishes even after using the rinse aid. Also, hard water doesn’t lather well and doesn’t wash away fats well.Guest: ↑25 Jul 2017, 23:13In your opinion, how much can this be harmful to health and is this a malfunction of the machine?

Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
Can you provide more details:
1) How to understand a severe case or not? The car is 1.5 months old.
2) Maximum settings, meaning set to the maximum level of water hardness and rinse 4 times?
3) Remains of plaque. They are white and can be easily wiped off with your finger. There are white stains on stainless steel pans, which are difficult to remove with a sponge. There was a stickiness on the plates, but they looked clean.
4) How do the ion exchanger and resin work? Maybe a link somewhere in detail.
"The smell of ozone (ions) on the dishes. This smell is similar to the smell in the forest after a thunderstorm." I don’t understand if this is the same thing or not. In my case, the smell of a dog is mixed with the smell of a swamp. When you enter an elevator where a large dog has just been riding, wet in the rain after an intense walk. This is what the dishes smelled like.

Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
Yesterday I launched PMM with a special cleansing agent. I wash it regularly inside, by hand, but periodically I buy a special product to remove plaque, grease, and odors. And I start without dishes. After this product, the PMM shone with cleanliness and was very tainted by chemicals (I don’t like that either, because the smell of dog and chemicals is unpleasant). Then I loaded the dirty dishes and after washing them, I opened the door and this terrible smell of DOGGY was heard throughout the entire kitchen (AGAIN). All the dishes stank, except for the ceramic bowl, I washed it by hand and the smell was still there. You just feel sick when you eat and feel this unpleasant stench. It’s disgusting to eat at home!
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
Good evening! This problem is on a global scale! I was staying with Italian friends, and their dishes also periodically smell from the car. They call it "smells like eggs." They are not doing anything globally about this.

So I ran into this problem when moving to a new apartment. I wash the dishes with my hands (we tried fairies, just soda or nothing at all) and the smell of dog all the time... nothing else smells like that in the apartment. The water in the apartment is hard. so it’s not about soft water

We need to spread the word on the Internet. Maybe someone solved the problem. Because I can’t eat from this dish, it starts to make me feel sick and unpleasant. Sometimes there’s a plate, a nipple, mmm, you can use your hands to wash the faucet and the smell goes away, but sometimes nothing helps
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
I wonder if only owners of BOSCH dishwashers smell like dog? Do others have no smell?

I solved my dog smell problem! Now I’m testing in different modes to confirm my own conclusions about the reason for the appearance of this smell. After some time I will post a full report in this thread.

Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
Tatyana,
To speed up the identification process reasons that provoke the appearance of the “dog” smell, I need additional information from you, such as: do you wash in PMM and how often do you wash frying pans or other utensils that, in addition to any non-stick coatings and plastic handles, have aluminum elements (for example: bottom, place attaching the handle to the frying pan itself, etc.)?

Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
I wash dishes with aluminum composition almost every day. And even yesterday the machine started up twice. Faith, there was no smell. How can you explain the same smell of dog when you wash the tiled floor (just with water) and mirrors (with mirror cleaner) and the terrible smell of dog, the same as sometimes after the dishwasher, on the floor with tiles, or from the mirrors. Again, sometimes there is a smell. (
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
Let’s kick the "dog" out of the house!
Background.
In December 2016 we are moving to a new apartment. New renovation, large kitchen (combined with a room), new dishwasher, supply and exhaust ventilation, etc. In the first week we lived without a stove (hob), because the “kitchen workers” did not have time to make a countertop, and therefore they cooked in the oven. Dirty dishes were washed in the PMM. There was a lot of new equipment and instructions for them were read as free time appeared. After a few days of using the PMM, according to the instructions, salt was added and rinse aid was added. Two weeks after installing the cooktop, I decided to roast pork. 20 minutes after cooking, a very strong smell (of wet dog) appeared in the kitchen. The smell spread throughout the apartment. The countertop near the stove, the floor tiles, and the curtains smelled. The smell went away only in the morning. The same thing happened the day after frying the chicken. Moreover, there was no smell when preparing soup or cooking any food in the oven. We began to notice that the dishes made from PMM smelled a little like dog. After a month, the PMM began to seriously stink, and the dishes from it seriously stank of dog. I washed the PMM with a proprietary cleaning product - it helped for 2 days. I tried to change the products - it didn’t help (now I have a year’s supply of detergent
I tried the traditional method: soda + vinegar + hydrogen peroxide, the stench from the PPM went away, but the PSINA remained.
I could still put up with the dog smell from the dishes, however, believe me, it was unrealistic to endure the same smell (but tens of times stronger) that appeared every time I fry it! Because of this, they almost completely abandoned fried foods. Perhaps this smell was intensified by the supply ventilation, which constantly, in large quantities, supplies fresh air into the apartment. They just wrote here that the smell appears or intensifies when fresh air enters.
Is it worth describing all the experiments I conducted over six months, I think not. I will describe only those actions that helped me personally completely get rid of this smell.
1I washed the PMM with a folk remedy;
2 I reduced the amount of salt supplied, according to the hardness of the water supplied to the PMM;
3 Replaced the 3-in-1 tablets with Somat standard powder;
4 Refused to wash any utensils containing aluminum alloy in the PMM;
After these actions, the smell disappeared completely! No dog, no stink! There is no smell when frying meat products! Dishes, floor tiles, countertops (agglomerate), curtains, kitchen facades (glass), everything that stank before does not smell at all!
Aluminum alloy in PMM rather This is what causes this smell. It (alloy) in dishes can be different, and perhaps some component enters into a chemical reaction during washing. The appearance of a smell on interior items is simply some kind of mysticism, which I cannot explain. Further correspondence with the manufacturer of the frying pan, which, in my opinion, is the source of this problem -
I have Neva metal frying pans, in which the bottom and handle mount are made of aluminum alloy - This is what the manufacturer writes in the questions -answers:
Can products from the NEVA METAL TABLEWARE factory be washed in the dishwasher?
Yes. But we strongly recommend using detergents with a pH level close to neutral (in the range of 6-8), or specially recommended for washing aluminum products (for example, Chrystal Charmy gel from Lion). Otherwise, a dirty gray coating may form in areas without coating (the machined bottom, the place where the handle is attached).
After 7 days of using the aluminum-free (and odorless) PMM, I decided to conduct an experiment and washed the frying pan along with the dishes. The dog smell is back! The dishes taken out of the PMM had an odor. But the most surprising thing was discovered next.....
The dishes, which had been washed last time and had no smell, were put on the table near the dishwasher, and after a while they smelled like dog! After washing the dishes again in PMM, without the frying pan, the smell did not go away! I had to wash the PMM again with a folk remedy.
The conclusion I made: after washing the frying pan, the smell appears not only on all the dishes that were with the frying pan in the PMM, but also on all objects located near the PMM, such as: dishes, countertops, ceramics, porcelain stoneware, etc. And as my experience has shown, it is not enough to simply remove the frying pan and carry out another cycle of washing the PMM; unfortunately, you have to rinse it again with PMM, and do not put dishes containing exposed aluminum there.
For six months, I washed the PMM with a branded cleaner Finish more than 10 times, but I liked the folk method better.
For the folk remedy you will need half a pack of soda, 0.5 liters of vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and essential oil.
250 grams of soda mixed with 20 milliliters of hydrogen peroxide + 5-7 drops of essential oil (I used eucalyptus), roll into 4 balls and place on the bottom of the PPM in each corner. Turn on a full cycle of 70 degrees (without pre-washing) in the middle of the cycle, open the PPM and place a deep plate on the bottom of the basket and pour 0.5 liters of 9% vinegar into it. Wait for the cycle to complete, wipe the perimeter of the door with a wet rag to remove soda deposits, take out the plate and run it again on a short cycle.
Good luck to everyone, and enjoy the smell!

Once a year you need to use "Dishwasher Cleaner". I use FINISH 250 ml. (in a square bottle). There is even a lemon flavor. The car is already 4 years old. No smell (pah-pah).

Thanks for the detailed answer! It’s so good that there are people who share their experiences in a similar issue
I washed the PMM with soda + vinegar, there was still a dog smell. It’s kind of strange, especially when it’s warm outside. Now it’s cool and it’s not there, even when there are dishes with aluminum. alloy BUT, today I washed the kitchen floor (tiles), first I washed it with floor cleaner, then with clean water, and after washing with clean water, the whole floor smelled terribly of this same dog
At the same time, I previously unloaded PMM (the dishes didn’t stink)
Sent after 4 minutes 10 seconds:
I have already tried every cleaner

Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
Tatyana, what is your city?
I am Chelyabinsk, my comments are above. Everything that I described in terms of water hardness helps. But in hot weather the smell is still present, although not as strong as before. Apparently a lot depends on the water itself. Our city has a large Shirshnevskoye reservoir. Sometimes I drive through the platinum and... there it is, the familiar smell of dog. As soon as the air temperature drops to +15-17 degrees, the smell disappears. The water blooms in hot weather; the water utility, apparently, does not fulfill its duties properly. The smell from the tap is not as strong as after drying in a PMM. Well, chemistry probably has some effect.
PS: I have been looking at the car since June, BOSH.

We had very warm weather for several days. Driving along the reservoir I again felt a familiar smell. Well, I think today the dishes will smell again... And that’s exactly what happened. The news today says that the water in the reservoir has turned green and is blooming for the third time this summer. The photos are amazing. Who is interested, watch the news from Chelyabinsk. Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
Hi all. So, the situation is like this...
There is a regular smell of dog from dishes washed by hand under the tap.
The smell is detected periodically, when the dishes are left for some time on a special drying rack after washing with household soap. That is, sometimes it stinks, sometimes it doesn’t.
Being an inquisitive and even meticulous person, I decided to find out what leads to the appearance of this smell. I turned on all my analytical abilities and began to think.
The open type dish dryer, metal, is located on the windowsill.
From time to time the window where the dryer is located opens for ventilation. That’s when it dawned on me!
When the cups dry on the dryer with the window closed, there is no dog smell! In the case when the window is open and a draft appears, blowing fresh air from the street onto the wet dishes - here you are, please - we encounter the smell of a dog!
What exactly happens when fresh air comes into contact with wet dishes - I don’t know, because I’m never a chemist.
Perhaps this has something to do with the presence of chlorine in the droplets of water remaining on the surface of the dishes, which gives some kind of chemical reaction when meeting fresh street air, which contains something that is not in room air (ozone, or something else). Maybe the intensity of the smell is also affected by the temperature of both the dishes sent for drying after washing and the street air (we are now minus three), that is, the difference between these temperatures.
The only important thing is that this is precisely related to the influx to the freshly washed dishes of fresh street air.
Such things!

Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
After washing in the dishwasher, you open it and immediately there is this smell (but not always), both with the window open and with it closed.
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
I’m talking about the smell of dog from dishes during drying, and not from the dishwasher, since I don’t use it, therefore, the logical conclusion suggests itself that the dishwasher has nothing to do with it. And the reasons for the appearance of the smell are somehow related to the chemical reaction of the components of water with air. In my case, this is confirmed in the experimental situation I cited above.
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
The point is not at all about PMM, as it might seem at first glance. It’s about the water! Many owners of PMM note that the smell of a dog is either there or not. The same goes for washing clothes - it also often stinks of dog, but not all the time. Sound the alarm to the water utility, have them take water samples and carry out bacteriological analysis.

Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
We disconnect the drain hose, put the end in a basin, pour hot water into the PMM up to the door (50*-70*C) and start any mode. We look at what comes out of the drain, if there is mold and all sorts of rubbish. That’s 0.5l. 9* vinegar per 5 l. hot water. and we repeat....we repeat....
I had an order in the Moscow region. with the smell of "dog"

Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
Smell on laundry from powder. And maybe try washing the bottom of the door where the seal is located.
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
After much experimentation, I can confirm that the smell disappeared after we stopped washing dishes made of aluminum alloys in the machine.
The smell did not disappear immediately, but after 5-6 washes and a single use of the machine cleaner.
So I recommend everyone to stop washing aluminum pans and pots.

Strange, this is the first time I’ve heard of such a problem. If soda and vinegar didn’t help, maybe you should use some kind of killers, etc., have you tried it? In fact, I know one anti-odor remedy - Odorgon. He helped me remove odors in the kitchen sink, I think he will also help you with the dishwasher, after all, his specialty. It definitely won’t get any worse, try it.
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
I am for the fresh air theory. In general, in winter there is practically no such smell (in summer all the time), but even in winter I put hot food on a plate that does not stink and sometimes put it out on the window to cool (for children)... and this stink appears in seconds.
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
I once bought a dishwasher cleaner, but it was so chemically and smelly that after using this product the dishes and the dishwasher itself stank for a long time. I decided to somehow wash it with dry mustard, poured out half the bag and set it to 70 degrees. Everything inside then sparkled - it shone, there was a subtle mustard smell, but the "dog" didn’t go away after washing the dishes. I’ll try to stop washing pans. Maybe that’s the point.
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
After washing I open the PMM, the smell is wonderful provided the windows are closed!!! I take a clean, delicious-smelling plate and place it in the open window for a couple of seconds. There is always the smell of dog!!! I don’t know what it is. Try it too, be sure to unsubscribe. I’m thinking of doing chem. examination.

Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
I had exactly the same problem, of course it didn’t stink of dog, but of some sort of sweat or just dampness, although the dishes were absolutely clean. In a word, odorgone Home helped me then - an excellent remedy for odors, quickly and forever, otherwise I really wanted to call a specialist.
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
You can use a chemical that kills the odor after washing. If the bunker smells like a dog (perhaps you washed the dishes after the dog), then specialized products will help you.
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
And I don’t think it’s because of the dishwasher. More precisely, not only from her. I used to wash soap in the sink and the combination of metal and water gave off an unpleasant smell. The dishwasher is working now, it is also made of similar metal and has the same smell as the sink.

All in all. I live in Crimea and also noticed that dishes start to stink if they are wet and exposed to a draft through an open window or balcony. Yes, this problem only happens in the summer, when the vents and windows are open. In winter this problem does not exist. I call this "weathered dishes." And yes, I also said that it stinks of ozone, because after rain and thunder the street air stinks exactly the same. It is strange that centuries later this problem has not been brought to the official level and there are no official verdicts or solutions to this problem.
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
Tell me, who describes this problem, do they have plastic pipes?
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
It doesn’t stink if you take the dishes out immediately upon completion of washing, after the notification, while still hot!!!
If it sits there, it starts to stink, as if it is absorbing the smell from the metal of the dishwasher.
Probably cheap stainless steel made from recycled materials. Or use mouthwash!!!
(it looks like this is the calculation to buy additional products)
About a year and a half - nonsense, it started to stink right away, then they changed the overflow valve, cleaned everything - it stinks. Everywhere you live - apartments, country houses - it stinks, it’s the same story everywhere. My friends in the city smell, but they don’t feel it, they say that I’m being picky or that this is already a disease!
It’s just that the majority of users do not notice this smell, perhaps that’s why the problem itself is does not exist!
People who keep dogs have a dog smell in their house, although they don’t smell it at all.
So:
- Take out dishes immediately
- use rinse aid
- periodically clean using special products,
- or without dishes - rinse with a drop of fairy, or a drop on the wall and a drop in the product tray
- and every time take out the filter and wash it (residues of everything accumulate on it)
Amen

Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
Good day. We have such a problem when the salt in the filtration system runs out, that is, the composition of the water changes, plaque and odor appear in the pmm.
Re: Dishes smell like dog after being washed
I also encountered the problem of "Dogs" when washing in PMM, after reading the entire thread I found many reasons for the smell, sometimes even comical. But smart people were also present, for which special thanks to them. To make sure that the problem was not at all in the PMM, I conducted an experiment - I washed two plates under ordinary running water, put one of them on the balcony (about +10 outside), and wiped the second dry with a towel. In the end, guess which plate smell hit your nose? That’s right, and here I see two solutions to the problem:
1. Immediately after washing, take out the dishes and wipe them dry with a towel.
2. Leave the dishes in the PMM until they dry completely without opening the door or letting in outside air.

Try to wash the filter more often. And for prevention, try OdorGone Home, this product will eliminate all unpleasant odors. I checked it personally. Good luck!
